History of Zoos

Zoos have not always appeared the way that they do today. Some of the first zoos were just used as a way do display power by wealthy people. These were private collections of animals which differ from today’s zoos because they were not used for entertainment purposes. The first version of a zoo was called a Menagerie. Egyptian wall carvings show evidence that these were around since 2500 BCE. The Egyptians would travel the world to find exotic animal then would hire handlers to look after them. Overtime, zoos have evolved into what we know them as now: a place observe and learn about animals.
